The recordings are taken from two speech corpora recorded at UCL: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phon.ucl.ac.uk\/project\/kidLUCID\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kidLUCID<\/a> and elderLUCID. Both of these corpora are available for research purposes (see <a href=\"https:\/\/darkslategrey-mongoose-524898.hostingersite.com\/index.php\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_487\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-487\" style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkslategrey-mongoose-524898.hostingersite.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/figure2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-487\" src=\"https:\/\/darkslategrey-mongoose-524898.hostingersite.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/figure2-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"figure2\" width=\"434\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valeriehazan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/figure2-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/valeriehazan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/figure2.jpg 505w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Change in median fundamental frequency based on data collected during \u2018spot the difference\u2019 tasks (diapix) carried out between pairs of talkers. These data have been accumulated across studies carried out with children (reported in Hazan et al., 2016) and with young and older adults (Hazan et al., 2018).<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3>Using the diapix task to elicit spontaneous speech in interaction<\/h3><p>&#8216;Diapix&#8217; (van Engen et al., 2011, Baker and Hazan, 2011) is a problem-solving &#8216;spot the difference&#8217; picture task used for eliciting spontaneous speech interactions between two participants. Participants have to try and work out what 12 differences there are between their pictures without seeing their partner&#8217;s picture. The pictures are carefully designed to elicit certain vocabulary items. This task has been used with children aged 8 years and above as well as with adults aged up to 85 years.\u00a0To get a &#8216;clean&#8217; recording for each participant, the diapix task can be done with each participant seated in a separate sound-treated booth and communicating via headphones.<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_460\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-460\" style=\"width: 712px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkslategrey-mongoose-524898.hostingersite.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beach_twinned.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-460\" src=\"https:\/\/darkslategrey-mongoose-524898.hostingersite.com-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beach_twinned-300x111.png\" alt=\"beach_twinned\" width=\"722\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/valeriehazan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beach_twinned-300x111.png 300w, https:\/\/valeriehazan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beach_twinned-768x284.png 768w, https:\/\/valeriehazan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beach_twinned-1024x379.png 1024w, https:\/\/valeriehazan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beach_twinned-1200x444.png 1200w, https:\/\/valeriehazan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beach_twinned.png 1531w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A picture pair from the diapixUK set of materials (Baker and Hazan, 2011). Participants have to find 12 differences between these pictures.<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3>Examples of spontaneous speech for different age groups<\/h3><p>The following examples illustrate the changes in the fundamental frequency of the voice (&#8216;voice pitch&#8217;) for female and male talkers at different ages. \u00a0They are extracted from recordings made while participants were carrying out the diapix task with their conversational partners in good listening conditions. All talkers are discussing the shack on the top right hand side of the pictures above. Median fundamental frequency (f0) values were calculated over the whole recording of the diapix task lasting 5-6 minutes on average.<\/p><h4>9-10\u00a0year olds<\/h4><p>Note how similar f0 values are for male and female talkers at this age.
